Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who pulled out of the 2016 Republican presidential primary and backed Donald Trump after a sixth-place finish in New Hampshire, may give the White House another shot.

According to Axios, Christie is seriously considering a 2024 run. The 58-year-old politician-turned-pundit told conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt that he isn’t ruling out a presidential run, but he’s told friends that he’s actively considering it, three people familiar with his thinking told Axios’ Jonathan Swan.

Christie is an old friend of Trump’s who has criticized the former president over false claims of election fraud and for Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol breach by a mob of his own followers. Christie has made the case that he’d be the only candidate with executive experience who’s run a presidential race before, Axios reported.

But Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity this week that he’s “seriously considering” a 2024 run, and many pundits speculate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is eyeing the White House.

Whether Trump runs or not won’t impact Christie’s decision, he’s told associates.

Christie was once a rising star in the Republican Party, with many top donors calling on him to run against former President Barack Obama in 2012. His administration became entangled in scandal after some of his aides purposely clogged traffic by closing a lane entering the George Washington Bridge in 2013.
