For fans of the first Dune film, you’ll be happy to know that its next instalment will be ready for consumption later this year – specifically in November. With a star-studded cast including Florence Pugh, Austin Butler and Christopher Walken, the second movie will also welcome back favourites Zendaya as Chani and Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the co-stars and director Denis Villeneuve shared some secrets from the upcoming saga, with the Euphoria actor revealing how some of the flirting scenes between her and Timothée were “awkward.” But not for the reason you’d think.
FYI, Dune is a sci-fi adventure film following Paul Atreides who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to save his family and the future of his people. The characters aren’t planet Earthers and hail from different parts of the solar system, making them very different to the average human being.
So, when it came down to the flirting scenes between Paul and Chani, Zendaya revealed that it “was funny trying to figure it out in this futuristic space talk.”
“How do they flirt?” she questioned, before adding: “What does that look like for a space warrior and the young duke of a planet? How do they show that they like each other? What does that even sound like?”
“Awkward and uncomfortable – there’s all those things,” the 26-year-old continued.
“I was like, Does Chani get awkward? Does that happen to her? Does she know what that feels like?”
Regardless of how clumsy the romantic scenes may or may not be, Villeneuve stressed that as much as the film is a “war epic action movie,” the “epicentre of the story is this relationship.”
He emphasised how capturing the spark between the two leads was imperative, adding that if the chemistry isn’t there on-screen, “there’s no movie.”
In terms of Paul and Chani’s relationship, Zendaya did make sure to point out that love is something that everyone can relate to, no matter who you are or where you’re from.
“These characters literally live on another planet, right?” she said.
“They’re aliens. It was interesting finding these tender moments in such turmoil and chaos. These characters are just young people forced into really, really intense circumstances.”
