Zach Wilson’s QB coach says he’s a ‘perfect fit’ in Jets offense

Zach Wilson’s personal quarterback coach doesn’t have any concerns about the young passer’s viability with the Jets, both as a player and person in one of the biggest media markets in the world.

Former BYU and NFL quarterback John Beck talked to NBC Sports’ Peter King about Wilson and shed some light on Wilson’s next potential spot. Beck said Wilson is a “perfect fit” in Mike LaFleur’s offense, which features a lot of the same plays and schemes Wilson ran in college.

“If I could have hand-picked from the offenses I know well, which one would have fit Zach best, it would absolutely be that one [with the Jets’],” Beck said.

Wilson lit up the college football world in 2020 with 3,692 passing yards, a 73.5 completion percentage and 33 touchdowns to just three interceptions. He showed off his ability to extend plays with his feet throughout the season, too, and added to the hype at his pro day in late March. All of this makes Wilson well-equipped to run the Jets’ offense, according to Beck.

“He brings such a skill set to get out on the edges, to be used in the keeper game, the play-pass game,” Beck said. “He can drive balls in very small space off unique platforms as he’s moving.”

All signs point to the Jets taking Wilson second overall in the draft, and Beck said the interviews between quarterback and team have gone well. Wilson already praised the Jets after his pro day and Joe Douglas all but confirmed Steve Young’s report that the Jets already decided on Wilson as their pick.

“The Jets are getting to know Zach as best as they possibly can, outside of being able to do a private workout,” Beck added.

But can Wilson handle the bright lights on New York? While Wilson has lived and played in Utah his entire life, Beck believes he’s well-suited for the big city on the East Coast.

“We’ve talked about that, the culture shock and how different it is,” Beck said. “It’s just the reality of the United States. He’s been to New York, as like a tourist. There will be a culture shock, being so far from home…  But it’s a great life experience. He’ll be good with it.”
