HOUSTON — Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez is dealing with a virus, manager Dusty Baker said Monday, but it doesn’t seem to be sapping his power.
Alvarez was in the lineup for ALCS Game 2, which Houston lost, 5-4, to the Rangers. After going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Sunday’s Game 1, he connected on an absolute no-doubter home run in the second inning on Monday.
The homer, which went 420 feet and left Alvarez’s bat at 108.6 mph, was his fifth in six postseason games in 2023, which puts him in some rarefied air. He followed that up with a solo shot off Rangers reliever Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the eighth inning. It marked his sixth homer in six postseason games, tying Giancarlo Stanton for most in a team’s first six playoff games.
Baker wouldn’t say exactly what Alvarez was dealing with, but said there was no way he wasn’t going to be in the lineup.
“His name is Yordan. That’s No. 1,” he said. “And plus, No. 2, the reports about him having a virus, I got a virus, everybody got a virus. So he’s fine. He’s better today than he was yesterday.”
Alvarez missed the club’s pregame introductions on the field prior to Game 1 of the ALCS on Sunday. His name was announced, but he never came out of the dugout to line up on the field with his teammates.
“He’s fine,” Baker said. “He’s better today than he was yesterday. And like I was telling somebody yesterday, as a responsible man, a family man, you go to work, you know? And I never saw my dad in the bed ever sick, and I’m sure he was sick. And sometimes as a man you just go to work.”
Baker dropped Alvarez to fourth in the lineup for Game 2 on Monday, which was the result of moving the struggling Kyle Tucker to the third spot.
“He’s been struggling for a while,” Baker said. “And Yordan struggled yesterday. So if we have both of them struggling, you don’t have as much. Hopefully we’ll get him going today.”
