Yimi Garcia, several Blue Jays ejected after Josh Donaldson HBP vs. Yankees

NEW YORK – Sparks flew at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, as the Yankees’ battle with the Toronto Blue Jays moved a notch higher in intensity.

After Giancarlo Stanton drove a game-tying three-run homer to right in the sixth inning off reliever Yimi Garcia, the right-hander drilled Josh Donaldson with an 0-and-1 fastball.

That got the attention of Aaron Judge and several Yankees, who rose to the top step of their dugout, shouting in Garcia’s direction.

Following a conference of all four umpires, Garcia was ejected for intentionally throwing at Donaldson, who was struck in the left elbow.

And that set off the Blue Jays, with pitching coach Pete Walker receiving a quick ejection after storming out of his dugout, along with manager Charlie Montoyo a few equally irate coaches, including Luis Rivera.

No warnings had been issued before the ejection of Garcia.

In the Toronto half of the sixth inning, Yankees reliever Miguel Castro nailed leadoff hitter Lourdes Gurriel Jr. with a fastball to the left elbow.

Montoyo was ejected in the seventh as the Jays’ dugout grew overheated again when a Jonathan Loaisiga pitch brushed back Bo Bichette.

Plate umpire Lance Barrett first warned the Toronto bench, then quickly tossed Montoyo, who came out to argue his side.

Already, Tuesday’s opener of a two-game series was the eighth game between the Jays and Yanks this year, in Game 29 of the season. The Yanks had won four of the first seven, including taking two of three games last week at Rogers Centre.

Before the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the Blue Jays are “one of the best teams we play, with a lot of guys who can really hurt you.’’
