NEW YORK — The largest crowd at Yankee Stadium this year saw one of its most deflating defeats.
Xander Bogaerts scored the go-ahead run thanks to a Mike King wild pitch to hand the Yankees a 5-4 defeat against the Red Sox in 11 innings on Friday night before 47,573 fans.
The Yankees tied it in the ninth inning and then stranded the bases loaded in the 10th for their fifth loss in six games. Aaron Hicks struck out to end the game, believing he had walked in a full count and tossing his bat. He was wrong.
In the 11th, Bogaerts, the ghost runner, moved to third base on a long fly out to left, and then with two outs and Bobby Dalbec in an 0-2 count, King spiked a slider. It bounced and spun in front of and away from catcher Jose Trevino, who couldn’t snatch it in time to run back and tag out Bogaerts.
The Yankees fell to 4-4 against the Red Sox this season. They started the day with a 13-game lead in the American League East. They fell to 62-28.
The Yankees were just 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
They played most of the game without third baseman Josh Donaldson, who was nursing an injured right finger but pinch hit in the 11th. Donaldson struck out.
The Yankees tied the game in the ninth inning and loaded the bases in the 10th only to not score.
In the ninth, Gleyber Torres lead off with an infield single that third baseman Rafael Devers couldn’t barehand in time off closer Tanner Houck. Then designated hitter Matt Carpenter got hit on the right elbow — but not after manager Aaron Boone was ejected during his at-bat for arguing strikes. Boone was thrown out and then got in the face of plate umpire DJ Rayburn. Boone yelled at Rayburn the previous inning for a low called strike three on Aaron Judge.
Then Isiah Kiner-Falefa went for a sacrifice bunt. It rolled right at Houck whose throw to third base was wide of Devers. Torres scored easily.
And then the Red Sox intentionally walked the lefty-swinging Hicks to fill the bases and get to Jose Trevino with no outs. But Trevino grounded to third base for a 5-2-3 double play, bringing up LeMahieu, who grounded to the pitcher to end the threat.
Torres had the bases loaded with one out in the 10th but bounced into a 4-6-3 double play.
Two more games against the Red Sox in the Bronx and the Yankees can start the All-Star break. They looked like they could use it to start sooner.
Aaron Judge’s run of futility extended, going hitless in five at-bats. He entered the night hitting just .192 over his last 28 games. DJ LeMahieu had three hits and Matt Carpenter had two, but the bottom three spots in the Yankees’ lineup combined to go 1-for-9.
Starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery overcame a rough beginning to last six innings and surrender three runs. The left-hander struck out four, walked one and gave up six hits. Aroldis Chapman gave up a go-ahead run in the seventh as the Yankees try to figure out how to use the struggling former closer.
Bobby Dalbec, leading off the inning, worked Chapman to a 2-2 count. Then Chapman threw a slider that hung thigh-high over the plate and Dalbec, entering the night hitting .204, nailed it. The ball flew well beyond the left-field wall. Chapman retired the next three hitters he faced.
The Red Sox scored two runs in Montgomery’s 31-pitch first inning. After Rob Refsnyder worked a full-count walk to lead off the game, Rafael Devers hammered a first-pitch home run to left-center.
The Yankees recovered in the third to go ahead, 3-2. DJ LeMahieu ripped a one-out single and Anthony Rizzo drew a two-out walk before Stanton deposited a missile deep into the right-center seats. It was Stanton’s 24th home run of the season.
Boston tied things at 3-3 when Christian Vazquez hit a solo shot with one out to left field. Vazquez trotted slow and watched it fly out — a no-doubter.
