Yankees’ Aaron Judge turned down this bigger offer from National League team

SAN DIEGO — If Aaron Judge was out for the money, he could have gotten more of it elsewhere than the Yankees.

The Padres had an offer of a whopping $400 million out to Judge, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly.

Judge ended up taking $360 million over nine years from the Yankees, according to the person.

The Padres’ offer came after San Diego was spurned by shortstop Trea Turner, who took a smaller deal from the Phillies. Turner turned down a reported $342 million from the Padres and took $300 million from the Phillies.

The Giants — Judge’s favorite team growing up in Northern California — were also believed to have a $360-million deal out for Judge.

It’s expected that with the deal, the Yankees will make Judge their first captain since Derek Jeter retired in 2014 and their 16th in franchise history.

Judge’s deal with the Yankees is not expected to contain deferrals.

It is believed that Judge flew out to San Diego on Tuesday afternoon via private jet while he was mulling the three offers. His last public appearance came Monday night when he visited Raymond James Stadium in Tampa to watch the Buccaneers vs. the Saints and to visit Tom Brady. Judge was joined by teammates Mike King and Nestor Cortes and ex-teammates Corey Kluber and Mike Tauchman.
