Yankees’ Aaron Judge, Mets’ Pete Alonso chasing MVP history

Judge #Judge

Talk about a dynamic duo.

New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge leads the majors with 60 home runs while New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso leads the majors with 131 RBI.

As a result, they could be setting the stage for the Big Apple to double-dip on MVP Awards this year.

The last time one city claimed both MVP winners was 2019, when the NL Award went to Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Cody Bellinger while Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout earned his third AL MVP.

The last time New York was home to both MVP winners was in 1956, when center fielder Mickey Mantle won it for the first time while Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe took home NL honors (as well as the NL Cy Young Award). Mantle would go on to win MVP two more times (1957 and 1962).

The Yankees and Dodgers also double-dipped in 1955 with catchers Yogi Berra and Roy Campanella earning MVP nods. It was Berra’s third MVP Award during his Hall-of-Fame career.

In 1954, Berra was AL MVP while New York Giants center fielder Willie Mays was the NL MVP for the first time. (Mays also won the award in 1965).

Berra and Campanella earned MVP honors in 1951.
