Wycombe Wanderers seal place in Wembley play-off final despite second-leg defeat

Wycombe Wanderers survived a 90-minute onslaught to deservedly seal their place in the League One play-off final against either Sunderland or Sheffield Wednesday on May 21.

Leading 2-0 on aggregate before kick-off, Gareth Ainsworth’s game plan for his ageing Wycombe squad, the oldest in the division, was to continue where they had left off at Adams Park last Thursday. Yet MK Dons were so potent as an attacking threat, Ainsworth, right, soon changed tactics, deciding to hold a “low block” for the entire second leg.

It paid off. Only once did the visiting side concede, when Troy Parrott’s first-half header handed the home side a lifeline.

It had looked a tall order for Liam Manning’s side to overcome Wycombe, unbeaten in their previous 13 matches,
