WWE Rumors: The Rock Wanted Roman Reigns Match at WrestleMania, Not Saudi Arabia Show

Roman #Roman

The Rock reportedly shot down the idea of having a dream match against Roman Reigns at a show in Saudi Arabia in favor of doing it at WrestleMania instead.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), the idea of The Rock facing Reigns at Saudi Arabia was discussed within WWE, but The Rock was adamant that the match should take place on the grand WrestleMania stage.

Last month, The Rock made a surprise return to WWE and referenced “The Head of the Table,” which is one of Reigns’ nicknames. Then, on last week’s episode of SmackDown, he ended the show by coming face to face with The Tribal Chief.

Cody Rhodes won his second consecutive men’s Royal Rumble match last month, which seemingly set the stage for a rematch of the WrestleMania 39 main event between Rhodes and Reigns. Rhodes even pointed at Reigns after winning the Rumble.

However, on last week’s SmackDown, Rhodes told Reigns that he would not face him at WrestleMania 40 despite his desire to eventually take the undisputed WWE Universal Championship away from him.

Rhodes said he received advice from several legends leading up to his WrestleMania decision and noted that The Rock was one of them, which led to the legendary Superstar making his return.

WWE has yet to officially announce the world title matches for WrestleMania 40, but it was strongly teased that The Rock will challenge Reigns, which would conceivably leave Rhodes to take on world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins.

Rhodes’ hopes of finishing his story and beating Reigns at WrestleMania may not be over, though, as Meltzer (h/t Lyle Kilbane of TJR Wrestling) reported that WWE is trying to get a groundswell of support behind Rhodes with its booking of the situation, much like it did with Daniel Bryan in 2014.

Despite the original main event for WrestleMania 30 being Randy Orton vs. Batista, Bryan was inserted to make it a Triple Threat after beating Triple H, but Meltzer (h/t Mukherjee) reported that he was told it won’t be a Triple Threat between Rhodes, Reigns and The Rock at WrestleMania 40.

Fans have expressed their desire to Rhodes to face Reigns at WrestleMania to the point of getting #WeWantCody trending on X, formerly known as Twitter, for multiple days.

If Reigns vs. The Rock is locked in to happen at WrestleMania 40, that could mean Reigns is pulling double duty with a match against The Rock on Night 1 and a match against Rhodes in Night 2.

Whatever the plan is, it is likely to become much clearer Thursday night when WWE holds a WrestleMania press conference in Las Vegas, which Reigns, The Rock and Rhodes will all be present for.
