‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt has been released by WWE.

The former world champion, who is regarded by many as one of the most creative minds in the company’s recent history, has been let go by Vince McMahon’s promotion after 12 years under contract.

In a brief statement, the company said: ‘WWE has come to terms on the release of Bray Wyatt. We wish him the best in all his future endeavours.’

Wyatt hasn’t been seen on screen since the night after WrestleMania 37 in April when he promised a fresh start, which came one night after he lost to Randy Orton at the show of shows.

Fans and fellow wrestlers have been stunned by the news, with Alexa Bliss – who has worked with him extensively over the past 18 months – paying tribute moments after the announcement.

She tweeted: ‘I really am at a loss for words… thank you so much Windham for everything you’ve done for this company. The most fun I’ve had is working with you. Such an amazing talent & the most kind person. I’m just in shock.’

There had been no reason give for his long absence, and recent reports claimed there was no timetable on his comeback either.

He’s been quiet on social media too, with very few posts over the past few months, although last month he did share a gif of himself shrugging and smiling in the Fun House in response to WWE’s SummerSlam announcement.

And on July 15, he replied to a fan saying how much they miss him and simply tweeted: ‘I miss you guys too. Believe me’.

Wyatt has one of the most creative minds in the business, and has constantly evolved his character over the years, including taking his cult leader persona to another level when he transformed into a children’s TV entertainer with a demonic alter ego.

Recently, a photo surfaced showing him in fantastic shape as he posed with a fan.

He can be seen smiling in the snap and appears to have toned up, with some on social media suggesting he’s in the best shape of his career.

Bray put his figure on display in a pair of black shorts and a tank top, with his blonde dreadlocks just visible under a baseball cap.

Now, the question is where he will go next – with more details sure to emerge about the circumstances of his release, including whether it was his or WWE’s decision.
