Becky Lynch, Lita and Damage CTRL.WWE

Welcome to Bleacher Report’s coverage and recap of WWE Raw on February 27.

With WrestleMania 39 still over a month away on April 1-2, WWE has five weeks to build up the card and advance all of the current storylines.

This week’s show saw Brock Lesnar respond to the challenge of Omos, and The Miz hosted a special Hollywood edition of Miz TV.

We also saw Damage CTRL defend the women’s tag team titles against Becky Lynch and Lita, while Candice LeRae battled Piper Niven, and Asuka faced Carmella.

Let’s look at everything that happened on Monday’s episode of Raw.

Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa vs. Street Profits

1 of 8

After we got a lengthy recap video showing us what happened last week, Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa made their way to the ring for a tag team match against The Street Profits. Jey Uso was nowhere to be found.

Jimmy delivered a promo trying to claim that The Bloodline is fine and dandy. He played off the drama as typical family stuff while saying Roman Reigns would continue to run the show.

Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins came out and talked some trash before they knocked Jimmy and SIkoa out of the ring. We returned from a break to see the match finally getting started. Dawkins took control but it only took Jimmy a moment to turn things around.

While the match was certainly competitive and gave both teams time to shine, The Bloodline was definitely controlling the pace more often than not.

The Profits were able to get in a bit more offense after the mid-match commercial break, but Sikoa still scored the win for his team with a Samoan Spike to Dawkins. This was a fast-paced match to get the crowd in the right frame of mind. Both teams looked good, and seeing how well Sikoa worked alongside his brother was fun.

However, WWE needs to figure out something more for Ford and Dawkins. They are over with the crowd and have had nothing to do for months because both sets of tag titles are tied up in this Bloodline story.

Winners: Solo Sikoa and Jimmy Uso

Grade: B

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Jimmy is right. Families do fight a lot.
  • You could see Jimmy struggling not to laugh when Ford and Dawkins were giving their promo.
  • Dawkins and Sikoa had a nice sequence that showed off a little speed and agility.
  • The way Dawkins has been able to add more moves to his arsenal while getting himself into better shape has been impressive. He is showing skills we never saw from him in NXT.
  • Ford does a lot of things really well, but his spinebuster needs a little work.
  • The VIP Lounge

    2 of 8

The ring was decked out with the furniture for the VIP lounge with MVP, but Brock Lesnar’s music hit and he made his way to the ring before MVP had a chance to come out.

They traded some words about the potential match between Lesnar and Omos at WrestleMania, and The Beast ended up being talked into it. In fact, he seemed gleeful about it.

They toasted and shook hands to make it official. Lesnar even gave MVP some of his own personal alcohol, but MVP ended up spitting it in his face on accident because it tasted terrible. He tried to apologize and help him clean up, but The Beast scooped him up for an F-5 to end the segment.

A match between Omos and Lesnar might not sell a lot of tickets, but the way this was done helped sell the match. Omos is not good on the mic yet, so having MVP do all of the work was the only way this was ever going to work.

    Grade: C+

    Notable Moments and Observations

  • Lesnar high-fiving MVP was hilarious.
  • What do you think was in Lesnar’s flask?
  • Cody Rhodes vs. Chad Gable

    3 of 8

The second match of the night featured Alpha Academy’s Chad Gable taking on Cody Rhodes. As usual, Otis was in Gable’s corner.

They started off with an exchange of quick takedowns and counters to show off their amateur wrestling skills, but one big right hand from Gable changed the mood quickly.

Rhodes began to sell a knee injury, so Gable became laser-focused on inflicting damage to that appendage. The American Nightmare avoided a flying headbutt to turn the tide back in his favor.

Both of these men are fantastic technical wrestlers, so this was a great match from bell to bell. Despite being much higher on the card, Rhodes sold a lot for Gable to make this feel more competitive.

Rhodes predictably picked up the win, but the journey to get the finish was tons of fun. The American Nightmare gave a promo about heading to SmackDown to finally have a face-to-face confrontation with Roman Reigns.

    Winner: Cody Rhodes

    Grade: A-

    Notable Moments and Observations

  • Rhodes made a little kid’s whole year by giving them a hug before the match. The smile on her face was so big and genuine. Sometimes adult fans need to remember that most pro wrestling is designed to appeal to younger fans. Seeing kids having a great time can make an event a lot more fun for the adults.
  • Gable has so many ways he can apply the ankle lock. It always looks so smooth whenever he transitions into it.
  • The missed diving headbutt looked great. Gable sold it perfectly.
  • Rhodes had a nice transition into a Figure Four.
  • The Cody Cutter from the top rope looked amazing.
  • Asuka vs. Carmella

    4 of 8

Asuka was out first for a match against one of the other women who was in the Elimination Chamber with her, Carmella.

Carmella did not seem intimidated by Asuka and put up a good fight, even taking control of the action a few times.

This match went through a commercial break, so this wasn’t just a quick squash for The Empress. WWE wants to portray Asuka as a beast, but she still sells for her opponents because she is a pro.

The match itself wasn’t anything special, but it served its purpose, which was to give Asuka a win as she awaits her title shot at WrestleMania. Carmella is good at putting other people over, so she was the right choice.

Asuka scored the win and called out Bianca Belair. The EST showed up but Carmella ended up shoving Asuka into her to end the segment.

    Winner: Asuka

    Grade: C+

    Notable Moments and Observations

  • Carmella’s original theme from NXT and her first run on the main roster was better than this current song. It fit her better.
  • Mella has some decent kicks in her arsenal. She’s better at a lot of things than most people will admit. She gets a lot of unnecessary criticism online for some reason.
  • One of the back fists Asuka hit looked like it may have connected a bit too hard. Either that or Mella was selling the impact a lot.
  • Candice LeRae vs. Piper Niven

    5 of 8

Nikki Cross accompanied Candice LeRae to the ring for her match against Piper Niven, but it didn’t seem like LeRae knew she was going to be there at first.

Niven had a significant size and power advantage, so she was able to dominate LeRae right out of the gate. She almost made The Poison Pixie pass out from a submission before sending her into the corner.

Niven grabbed Cross and threw her into the barricade at one point, but as soon as she got back into the ring, LeRae rolled her up for the win.

Instead of seeing if Cross was alright, LeRae just went straight to the back. This was quick and didn’t really give either woman a chance to stand out.

    Winner: Candice LeRae

    Grade: D+

    Notable Moments and Observations

  • This change in Cross’s character could go either way. This is either going to be just another gimmick she leaves behind or this is going to make her more sympathetic to the WWE Universe.
  • LeRae took a big bump from the top rope to the floor, but she made it look good.
  • Miz TV and Bobby Lashley vs. Elias

    6 of 8

We got our second talk show segment of the night when The Miz arrived to host another episode of Miz TV. After he ran down the WrestleMania card that has been set up so far, Seth Rollins joined him in the ring.

The Visionary ended up superkicking The Miz and stealing his phone so he could call Logan Paul. He mocked Jake Paul for losing his boxing match on Sunday before issuing a challenge for Paul to show up next week and face him man-to-man.

Rollins was having a ball and The Miz always plays a good stooge, but this segment was just the setup for next week, so it wasn’t trying to be anything special.

    Grade: C+

After a break, Bobby Lashley was out for a rematch after the man he decimated last week, Elias. Before the match began, we saw some clips from Bray Wyatt mocking Lashley.

Elias rushed The All Mighty as soon as the bell rang, but after his initial onslaught, Lashley scooped him up for a bodyslam to immediately take control.

Rick Boogs was shown taking notes backstage as Elias began to make a comeback at ringside. However, it was a short-lived comeback. The All Mighty was able to grab him in the Hurt Lock to get the submission victory. This was quick but they had good energy. It made Lashley look like a monster, so it was effective.

    Winner: Bobby Lashley

    Grade: C+

    Notable Moments and Observations

  • Rollins getting the crowd to keep singing just to piss off The Miz was great.
  • The sound effects for The Miz’s phone playing through the sound system in the arena was a bit overkill.
  • The way Lashley just picked Elias up like it was nothing is never going to stop being impressive. Elias is a big dude and Lashley didn’t even break a sweat.
  • Otis vs. Johnny Gargano

    7 of 8

Otis went looking for a match after a conversation with Maxxine Dupri and Maximum Male Models, and Johnny Gargano was the man to answer the call.

Dupri was at ringside to watch as Otis took control early on by overpowering his much smaller opponent. It took Johnny Wrestling a couple of minutes before he could put together any offense.

Mace and Mansoor tried to interfere, but Dexter Lumis appeared in the crowd and grabbed Mace in a chokehold. Gargano recovered and hit a huge DDT on the apron.

Gargano was able to get the win in what ended up being a short match. It had some highlights, but they could have done a lot more with just a few more minutes.

    Winner: Johnny Gargano

    Grade: C+

    Notable Moments and Observations

  • Otis was there for Gable earlier, but Gable was nowhere to be seen for this match.
  • The apron DDT spot looked good.
  • WWE needs to figure out what to do with Lumis because this pairing with Gargano only works with the rest of The Way.
  • Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky vs. Lita and Becky Lynch (Women’s Tag Titles)

    8 of 8

The main event of the night was the Women’s Tag Team Championship match. Kai and Sky put the belts on the line against Lynch and Lita.

The Man and The Genius of the Sky started for their teams. Lynch took control but their exchange only lasted a few seconds. Lita and Kai both tagged in and locked up so Lita could hit a few moves.

The challengers had the match firmly in hand as the show cut to a break. We returned to see The Man trying to get the win against The Leader of Team Kick. Sky broke up an armbar by sending Lynch out of the ring so she could hit a moonsault from the middle rope to the floor.

This was a solid tag team match to close the show. Lynch did a lot of the heavy lifting for her team, but Lita still had some good moments. You could definitely see some ring rust on her, but her limited time in the ring helped keep it from being a major issue.

Trish Stratus ran down and attacked Bayley to even the odds. Lita ended up hitting Sky with a moonsault to get the pin and win the tag titles. Stratus helped them celebrate to close the show.

    Winners: Lita and Becky Lynch

    Grade: B

    Notable Moments and Observations

  • The original plan was apparently to have Trish Stratus team up with Lynch, but Lita seems like a better fit for several reasons.
  • Lita seemed to have a little trouble jumping off of Lynch’s back to hit a move in the corner.
  • Sky’s moonsaults truly are a thing of beauty.
  • This whole thing will likely lead to a six-woman tag match at WrestleMania.
