WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Aliyah and Raquel Rodriguez win the women’s tag titles

Aliyah #Aliyah

On Monday night, the women’s tag team championship tournament came to an end when Aliyah and Raquel Rodriguez took on Dakota Kai and IYO SKY in the finals. Despite being the underdogs, Rodriguez and Aliyah were able to outwit Kai and SKY to capture the titles in the main event of Raw.

The win came with a bit of an assist by Bianca Belair, Alexa Bliss and Asuka, who caused a distraction that allowed Aliyah to score the title-winning pinfall.

Elsewhere on the show, Edge and The Mysterios brawled with Judgement Day, setting up a tag match for Saturday’s Clash at the Castle pay-per-view.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

Aliyah and Raquel Rodriguez win the women’s tag titles

Women’s Tag Team Championship — Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah def. Dakota Kai & IYO SKY via pinfall to win the titles. Other women’s tag teams were around the monitors backstage watching the match. Bayley made the save for her team, pulling SKY from Rodriguez’s clutches and setting up a near-win when SKY hit a moonsault. Bianca Belair, Alexa Bliss and Asuka ran to ringside to chase Bayley off. As Kai and SKY watched the chaos, Aliyah made a blind tag. SKY hit a crucifix driver on Rodriguez and rolled out of the ring trying to allow Kai to get the pin, but Aliyah snuck in to score the roll-up and capture the titles.

Rodriguez and Aliyah aren’t the most exciting tag team in the women’s division, but it makes more sense to put the belts on them than Kai and SKY. Bayley’s group has a big storyline in place with their beef with Belair, Asuka and Bliss so spreading the belts elsewhere keeps more stories flowing rather than bogging the titles down as a minor part of a larger feud. Should Sasha Banks and Naomi return soon, it gives them a team that is freed up for a title program. Grade: B

Edge and The Mysterios run off Judgement Day

Damian Priest & Finn Balor def. Dolph Ziggler & AJ Styles via pinfall when Priest hit Ziggler with South of Heaven. After the match, Edge was shown arriving at the arena. Rather than head to the back, Judgement Day re-entered the ring to stand their ground. Edge eventually came to the ring after Priest, Balor and Rhea Ripley again vowed to end Edge’s career. Edge came to the ring, leading to an ambush as Rey and Dominik Mysterio attacked Judgement Day from behind. After being thrashed by Edge and the Mysterios, Judgement Day was able to escape after Ripley dared Dominik to hit her with a kendo stick before getting him to hand the weapon over. Later in the night, it was confirmed that Edge and Rey would face Judgement Day at Clash at the Castle, frustrating Dominik that he would not be his father’s partner.

We are fast approaching a point where Rey and Dominik need to be removed from any storyline with Judgement Day. It appears they are starting to lay out a possible Dominik heel turn, which could be the next phase of that whole story but until then, the whole thing feels somewhat flat. Grade: C+

What else happened on WWE Raw?

  • Bianca Belair, Alexa Bliss & Asuka def. three enhancement talents when Asuka forced a submission with the Asuka Lock. After the match, the three women cut a promo on Bayley, Dakota Kai and IYO SKY ahead of their Clash at the Castle match.
  • The Street Profits def. Alpha Academy via pinfall when Montez Ford hit Chad Gable with a frog splash. The match came after Alpha Academy interrupted a Kurt Angle promo. Angle refused to join the Academy and then the match was held with the stipulation that he would have to join if Alpha Academy won.
  • Riddle and Seth Rollins were interviewed ahead of Saturday’s match. They were kept in separate areas after nearly brawling in the parking lot earlier in the day. They were shown continuing to argue after the interview ended, with Riddle getting bleeped repeatedly after Rollins said that Riddle’s wife divorced him and took his kids away “because they don’t want to see your b— ass anymore.”
  • Bobby Lashley def. The Miz via submission with a Hurt Lock. Miz was doing well when he was distracted by Dexter Lumis in the crowd, allowing Lashley to finish him off. Earlier in the night, it was revealed that Lumis was arrested and then released after kidnapping Miz last week because Miz refused to tell the police what happened. Later in the night, as Miz was leaving the arena, Lumis popped up in the backseat of his SUV.
  • Kevin Owens def. Jey Uso via pinfall after hitting a stunner. Owens interrupted a promo by The Usos and Sami Zayn, leading to the match. Zayn had the chance to hit Owens with a chair during the match but didn’t pull the trigger.
