Wade Barrett surprisingly appeared in the color commentator role alongside Vic Joseph. Barrett was terrible in place of Booker T as he actually said “sha’mon” as an ad-lib during Williams’ entrance.

The Wolf Dogs’ entrance was impressive as they rode motorcycles on their way to the ring.

As soon as the bell rang, fans started chanting “table,” as if Von Wagner was in this match.

Coming off his Royal Rumble appearance, fans started barking for Bron Breakker, but were immediately drowned out by chants of “whoop that trick!”

Breakker nailed an awesome back suplex into a cutter on Hayes that evoked “NXT” chants.

WWE wisely kept Trick out of most of this match since he’s working double-duty tonight, and will likely have an epic encounter with Iljia Dragunov. Unfortunately, when Williams tagged in, he teased a leg injury.

Hayes had a couple missteps, including an awkward Asai Moonsault on Corbin.

Breakker continued to steal the show when he hit a back suplex on Williams, while Willians was holding trick.

The Wolf Dogs won the Dusty Cup when Breakker hit a huge Spear on Hayes and won the match, with Williams unable to save Hayes in time. Breakker was the star of this show.

The Wolf Dogs vs. Trick and Melo Grade: B+ Dominik Dijak Def. Joe Gacy

This match started out with no heat, but quickly gained momentum amid a series of dangerous, inventive spots; like when Dijak dove through a table with toys on them.

Dijak hit Feast Your Eyes while blindfolded with duct tape, but couldn’t find Gacy. Fans chanted “you can’t see him!”

Dijak hit a second “Feast Your Eyes,” with surprisingly less heat, as he picked up the victory.

Dominik Dijak vs. Joe Gacy Grade: B OTM Def. The D’Angelo Family

Adrianna Rizzo. in her first WWE NXT live event, connected with a series of awful punches on Jaida Parker.

Rizzo got ahead of herself a little later on in the match, and Barrett had to cover for her by calling her a hothead who didn’t like taking direction.

OTM dominated long stretches of this match by working over Tony “Stacks STX ” Lorenzo, to the point where Vic Joseph admitted he’s seeing Stacks “get his ass kicked.”

OTM won, setting up a future Tag Team Title match with the D’Angelo family. At least Rizzo and Parker got their feet wet.

Backstage, Trick Williams said he needs Carmelo Hayes right there when he wins the NXT Championship—thereby sealing his fate.

D’Angelo Family vs. OTM Grade: C- Lyra Valkyria Def. Roxanne Perez And Lola Vice

Lyra Valkyria’s hair began shedding all over the ring early in the match, which was featured mild split chants for both babyfaces early on.

Joseph said Roxanne Perez isn’t the same happy-go-lucky person she was before, but you could have fooled me with her happy-go-lucky entrance.

After connecting with Pop Rocks, Lola Vice cashed in her Breakout Tournament contract—mostly to tepid boos—making this match a Triple Threat. This means she cashed in during a situation where her odds to win the NXT Women’s Title shrunk. Why not wait until after this match? Even Wade Barrett called this out.

Once this match turned into a full-blown Triple Threat match, Vice was made to look even more ridiculous. At least she gets a good reaction for those machine-gun kicks.

After “executing her NXT Breakout Tournament Contract” midway through a competitive match, it was Lola Vice who took the pin. I can’t.

Backstage, Lola Vice and Roxanne Perez engaged into a fierce brawl.

Lyra Valkyria vs. Roxanne Perez and Lola Vice Grade: C Oba Femi Def. Dragon Lee

To quote Jim Ross, Oba Femi is a certified “blue-chipper,” and as a green giant, he couldn’t have picked a better person to work with than Dragon Lee.

Femi dazzled the crowd by choke-slamming Lee into an office chair on the outside.

Dragon Lee unbelievably connected on a power bomb from the corner, and Femi returned the favor by yeeting him around the ring and hitting a power bomb of his own. Oba Femi certainly looked like a rookie in this match, but a good rookie. This man has so much potential.

Oba Femi vs. Dragon Lee Grade: B Ilja Dragunov Def. Trick Williams

Ava Raine announced NXT Battleground will be held in Savannah, Ga.

Williams vs. Ilja Dragunov started with chants of “whoop that trick!” and a Williams with a bloody lip. Williams evened the odds with a kick to the nose that made Dragunov bleed.

This was the garden-variety bloody Ilja Dragunov-style match, but like all of them, it was awesome.

Fans chanted “whoop that trick” throughout the match. It just felt like his night in Tennessee.

Dragunov and Hayes got in a scuffle that resulted in Melo “accidentally” clipping the bad knee of Trick Williams.

Williams kicked out of two H-Bombs to a huge pop. He then connected with a big boot to an even bigger pop, but a nearfall.

Melo’s involvement caused a ref bump, leading to a Trick Knee and a visual 10-count. Dragunov went on to win. Wrong choice.

Expectedly, Carmelo Hayes turned on Trick Williams after the credits rolled, setting up the first long-term, main event rivalry between two Black men in WWE history. Melo attacked Williams’ injured knee with a chair as the crowd chanted “Melo sucks!”
