WWE Extreme Rules ended on the highest of highs as Bray Wyatt made his sensational return following the Fight Pit main event.

It’s the one night a year where every match goes extreme, and while parts of the in-ring action across the three and a half hour show were a mixed bag, the company delivered even before the epic scenes at the end.

Matt Riddle defeated Seth Freakin’ Rollins inside the Fight Pit in a physical and entertaining match, with the diving senton off the top of the cage in particular getting the crowd on their feet.

In the end, he got the win over his bitter rival as MMA legend Daniel Cormier, who was serviceable as the referee, made the count – but this night will always be remembered for what happened next.

As Riddle celebrated on the stage and the end of show graphic appeared, the lights cut out with commentator Michael Cole brilliantly asking if they were still on air, and a haunting voice started singing He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands.

As the song rolled on, Firefly Fun House characters came to life around the arena in Philadelphia, with a mysterious door surrounded by smoke also appearing.

Eventually it opened and Wyatt – sporting a haunting new mask – stepped through with his lantern in hand to an incredible ovation, which hit another level when he removed the mask and officially made his return.

Now, it’ll be fascinating to see what Bray’s character has in store for fans as he starts undoubtedly the biggest run of his career.

Ronda Rousey wins SmackDown Women’s Title, Edge saves Beth Phoenix and loses wild I Quit match

In the first match of the night, the Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook was a main event level fight as the Brawling Brutes picked up a huge with over Imperium.

Getting Extreme Rules started in a fitting way, this was an all out brawl with all six men shining in a brutal instant 20-minute classic.

Up next, Ronda Rousey became two-time SmackDown Women’s Champion by beating Liv Morgan in a decent match which had plenty of extreme moments but seemed to be missing a bit of chemistry.

Sadly for Liv, her first reign with the gold wasn’t too memorable (although she’s not to blame for that), but at least she passed out rather than tapped out – and the smile as she faded was a great visual.

Drew McIntyre and Karrion Kross got the action started before the bell even rang for their Strap Match, with Kross refusing to put the leather strap around his wrist as they brawled at ringside.

Eventually the action got underway with the competitors attached, with both men taking a lot of punishment.

In the end, Drew was lining up the Claymore when Scarlett hopped into the ring and used pepper spray on her husband’s opponent, helping her man to victory.

In a great surprise, Bianca Belair kept rolling as Raw Women’s Champion with a statement win over Bayley in an historic Ladder Match.

This was an absolutely fantastic bout with the EST of WWE withstanding a lot of punishment – including some interference from Damage CTRL’s Iyo Sky and Dakota Kai – before a K.O.D. on Bayley onto a ladder.

Also, props to the Role Model, who paid tribute to the late Sara Lee on her wrist tape in an emotional moment.

Edge and Finn Balor had a slow start to their I Quit match but things really picked up in the final stretch with a wild Attitude Era style slobberknocker, with brawls through the crowd and a LOT of drama.

As soon as Judgment Day came out to help Finn, this really picked up with Dominik Mysterio battering his dad Rey (pops to Michael Cole’s commentary) and Rhea threatening a con-chair-to on Beth Phoenix to goad Edge into quitting.

The Rated R Superstar did just that so save his wife, but had a look of horror on his face as Beth cracked her with a chair anyway.
