‘Wordle’ #948 Answer, Clues for Tuesday, January 23 Puzzle

Good Tuesday #GoodTuesday

Another day, another chance to prove your Wordle prowess. If yesterday’s answer of “Tweak” had you stumped, today is your chance to show the word puzzle game who’s boss.

Wordle launched in October 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Created by Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle, the game was a gift for his crossword-loving partner as a couple’s activity during lockdown.

Realizing that other people might enjoy solving Wordle’s daily brainteasers, he uploaded the game online. A month after launch, Wordle had just 90 players. By January 2022, it had over 2 million.

Seeing the game’s potential, The New York Times snapped Wordle up for a seven-figure sum.

The outlet hired an editor in November 2022 to curate the game’s list of a possible 2,309 five-letter words—enough answers to last until 2027. Originally, Wordle had 2,315 potential answers, but six were removed by The New York Times due to either being offensive, old-fashioned or using a non-American spelling.

Despite hiring a human to manage the word bank and choose the daily answer, The New York Times assured users that the game would remain the same.

“Wordle’s gameplay will stay the same, and answers will be drawn from the same basic dictionary of answer words, with some editorial adjustments to ensure that the game stays focused on vocabulary that’s fun, accessible, lively and varied,” the publication’s director of games, Everdeen Mason, said in a statement.

According to word-finder website WordsRated, “S” is the most common starting letter with more than 15 percent of players using this letter first. It’s a good choice too, as there are 167 more words that begin with S than any other in the game—365 in total. In second place is the letter C at 8 percent, with B the third most popular choice at 7 percent.
