It seems hard to believe, but it’s a year since New York software developer Josh Wardle first released Wordle to the general public. Even he, surely, would be surprised at the global sensation that the game has become.

Part of Wordle’s appeal is arguably its simplicity, with new players able to join even if they have no past experience of word puzzles. Each day a new five letter word is released, which the player is tasked with guessing in six attempts or less.

After each attempt the letters light up, indicating how accurate the guess was. If a letter goes green it is in the word, and in the correct location. Yellow means the letter features in the answer, but has been put in the wrong place, whilst gray tells you it’s not there at all.

Speaking to Newsweek in January, Wardle admitted that, despite inventing Wordle, he sometimes struggles to work out the answer.

He said: “Well, I did create Wordle and I’m not very good at it, so there’s your answer! I’m afraid I’m not really the best.

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”

Also in January, Wardle sold Wordle to The New York Times for an undisclosed seven figure fee, though the game remains free to play.

Since its launch Wordle has helped inspire a number of other online puzzles, including Worldle and even Taylordle for Taylor Swift fans.

The answer to today’s puzzle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution if you want to work it out for yourself. To help you solve today’s Wordle, Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.
