Sydneysiders will be subject to stay-at-home orders under a major escalation of COVID restrictions.

Four local government areas – Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick and the City of Sydney – will be subject to the lockdown measures beginning at 11.59pm on Friday.

Residents and those who work in the LGAs will have to follow the new rules for a week.

“You need to stay at home unless absolutely necessary,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

New Sydney COVID-19 restrictions

There are only four reasons for people in the four LGAs to leave home under the new measures, being:

  • to work or study
  • to exercise outdoors, with no more than 10 gathering at one time
  • to provide or seek care
  • to shop for essential goods and services

Berejiklian stopped short of calling the restrictions a “lockdown”.

“We appreciate what impact this will have significantly on businesses, especially in the CBD and those four council areas we’ve announced,” she said.

“And whilst we’re doing really well with the virus – our contact tracers are doing an unbelievable job, the people who we’re interviewing are doing a great job – the advice from (NSW) Health is, we don’t want to see this situation linger for weeks.

“We would like to see this situation end sooner rather than later.”

NSW’s existing COVID-19 restrictions, including masks indoors and on public transport, have been extended until midnight next Friday.

There were 22 new cases of COVID-19 reported by NSW Health on Friday, including three without a source of infection.

A case earlier reported in a nine-year-old child who attended St Charles’ Catholic Primary School remains under investigation.

As cases continue to emerge, more venues are declared as exposure sites.

Overnight, more than 20 venues were added to the exposure site list, with another added on Friday morning.

A person since confirmed to have COVID-19 visited Cafe de la Fontaine in Potts Point on three straight days from Saturday, June 19 to Monday, June 21.

Anyone who entered the cafe during the following times should seek testing and isolate for 14 days regardless of result.

  • Saturday, June 19 between 10am-11.30am.
  • Sunday, June 20 between 12pm-1.30pm and again between 3.50pm-4.50pm.
  • Monday, June 21 between 3.15pm-4.15pm.
  • Further, anyone who attended the cafe at the same times above but only ordered, paid and sat outside is a casual contact.
