Woman attacked in Vallejo last month dies; suspect was gunned down by six cops

Vallejo #Vallejo

A Vallejo woman who was kidnapped, beaten and left wrapped in a blanket on the side of a road in the East Bay hills, has died, Vallejo police confirmed this week.

Vallejo police spokeswoman Brittany Jackson said the 29-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries in an Alameda County hospital last week after being allegedly attacked by Juan Ayon-Barraza, 24, on the morning of April 16 as the two went to have breakfast in the city of Vallejo.

Ayon-Barraza, 24, was shot and killed later that day after leading Oakland officers on a chase to Richmond. Six officers — five from Oakland police and one from Richmond — fired at Ayon-Barraza, after he allegedly raised a gun at officers.

The woman’s name has not been made public. Neither Jackson nor the Solano County Coroner have agreed to release it.

The woman had been in critical condition for more than a month, after a hectic day that started when Ayon-Barraza allegedly attacked her for still-undisclosed reasons, and ended when he was shot and killed by officers in Richmond.

On the afternoon of April 16, Ayon-Barraza was spotted dumping the woman just a short distance from the unincorporated Contra Costa town of Canyon. Minutes later, Oakland police located Ayon-Barraza near the Highway 13/24 junction, heading toward Interstate 580, and began chasing him.

When the chase got to Richmond, Ayon-Barraza ran over two Oakland cops, which was caught on video. One of the officers suffered broken bones in his leg.

The chase ended at South 37th Street and Stege Avenue in Richmond, where six officers — five from Oakland and one from Richmond, fatally shot the man sometime after 7:30 p.m. Police say Ayon-Barraza raised his pistol at the officers before they opened fire. Authorities initially believed Ayon-Barraza fired at the officers, but now say it’s unclear whether he did or simply brandished the gun.

Police later determined Ayon-Barraza attacked the woman earlier in the day.

The woman told family members she was getting breakfast with Ayon-Barraza earlier in the day. Authorities have not revealed how the two knew each other. A short time later, Ayon-Barraza called the woman’s family member and “made an unsettling comment — causing them to be extremely concerned for her well-being,” a police news release says.

The family confronted Ayon-Barraza in person, but he ran from them. At the time, the woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
