Wolves receive ‘ridiculous’ response as Chelsea fixture could be played on Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve #ChristmasEve

Wolverhampton Wanderers Premier League clash with Chelsea is reportedly in line to become the first game to be played on Christmas Eve since 1995.

The match set to be played at Molineux is currently scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 23 but could be moved due to TV requirements. According to The Telegraph, a lunch time kick-off is being considered.

The festive schedule is still being finalised which meant that England’s top tier has abandoned the plans to announce the new fixture on Friday. The last time a top-flight game was played on Christmas Eve was 28 years ago when Leeds beat Manchester United 3-1.

It isn’t a common occurrence with games taking place on the weekend before Christmas and around Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.

However, there may be more pressure to accommodate the festive schedule this year given Christmas Day falls on a Monday. With Christmas Eve being on a Sunday, it is going to become an appealing day for broadcasters to target.

The possibility of Wolves playing on Christmas Eve has prompted several responses from fans. One Old Gold supporter said: “Dreadful from the Premier League. Fans put in last in the pecking order yet again.”

A second added: “Pathetic, making it harder for away fans to attend games every day” while a third continued: “No consideration for the fans yet again. It’s all money related,”

Another concluded: “How ridiculous is that? Many people won’t be able to attend.”
