Liverpool had a wretched January to start the new year. Zero wins in the Premier League which included a 3-1 loss to Brentford and 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion. The only victory for the Reds came at Molineux when Harvey Elliott scored for a 1-0 win in a replay of the FA Cup third round.

On Saturday afternoon, Liverpool returned to Molineux in a different competition with the potential of rising up to 6th with a victory. But they were handed another hefty loss as Wolverhampton Wanderers would go on to score three to humiliate Jurgen Klopp’s side further this campaign.

The Liverpool manager made just two changes to the side that was knocked out of the fourth round of the FA Cup against Brighton & Hove Albion — bringing in Joel Matip to partner Joe Gomez at centre-back, with Ibrahima Konate out injured and a full return for Darwin Nunez who replaced Harvey Elliott in the starting eleven.

The midfield stayed the same, with Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago and Naby Keita in the middle. Mohamed Salah maintained his position up front, partnered with Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez.

Liverpool began the match in typical fashion for 2022/23: slow. Joel Matip turned into his own goal inside the first five minutes before Alisson could have the chance to clear off the line.

It wouldn’t take long for the hosts to double their advantage as new-signing Craig Dawson profited from poor set-piece defending from Liverpool to smash home a second for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

There were glimmers of what this Liverpool team is capable of through Darwin Nunez as the Uruguayan striker continued his personal story of the season in seemingly not being able to find the back of the net regularly enough.

It was Naby Keita’s turn next to be left with his face in his hands after he couldn’t believe he didn’t score from the centre of the box. Compact defending from the home side kept the Guinean from scoring.

The game was finally won by Ruben Neves after he was teed up by Adama Traore. Jeers of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” from the Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters aimed at a disheartened Jurgen Klopp rang around Molineux.

It’s the third time in Liverpool’s last four Premier League matches that the Reds have conceded three goals. Also three defeats in the last four.

Liverpool look disjointed, lethargic and lost. The mentality giants of old have seemingly shrunk. And Jurgen Klopp is left to fix it.

Up next for Liverpool is the small matter of the Merseyside derby at Anfield against Everton. Kick-off is at 8pm on Monday, 13 February. You won’t want to miss it — or maybe you will.

You’ll Never Walk Alone.
