With Rams eyeing WR talent, Mike Williams could be a free-agent fit

The Los Angeles Rams have a dynamic receiver duo with Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp, which ranks among the best in the NFL when both are healthy. Yet, it’s clear they’re in the market for additional talent at wide receiver – even after re-signing Demarcus Robinson to a one-year deal.
They met with Rome Odunze at the combine and could trade up for him in Round 1 of the draft, and they were reportedly interested in Mike Evans before he returned to the Buccaneers. Those are two big names at the position, and another just became available who could interest the Rams.
The Chargers are cutting Mike Williams after seven seasons, which is purely a salary cap move to free up space. He’ll be eligible to sign with any team right away and he could be a good free-agent fit with the Rams.
For starters, he’s a similar type of receiver as Evans. He’s 6-foot-4 and 218 pounds, and he plays “above the rim” as a wideout. He’s made countless eye-popping catches where he goes up for a high pass and somehow comes down with the reception, whether it’s over a defender or along the sideline.
The Rams don’t currently have a receiver with his size and leaping ability, but that’s the type of wideout Matthew Stafford has enjoyed throwing to in his career. It’s what they tried to give their quarterback by signing Allen Robinson in 2022, but that didn’t work out the way they hoped.
Williams is 29 years old and is coming off a season in which he missed 14 games due to injury, but that will drive down his price on the open market, thus giving the Rams a better chance to sign him after already spending a bunch of money in free agency.
His fit on the outside with Nacua and Kupp splitting time in the slot would be seamless. He’s a true X receiver capable of winning one-on-one without generating a ton of separation, and he has enough speed to stretch the field vertically. That’s exactly the type of receiver the Rams need, and it’s why they’ve had their eye on Odunze and Evans.
A bonus for Williams would be that he doesn’t have to move if he signs with the Rams. He can just change locker rooms at SoFi Stadium and still remain in Los Angeles, which seems like a good reason to at least consider signing the Rams if they come calling.
If the price is right and Williams is fully recovered from his torn ACL suffered last season, the Rams should look into signing him. He’s exactly the type of wideout they’ve been looking for.
