William Gallas’ comments on Raphael Varane have aged terribly as Arsenal fans make the same point

William Gallas’ comments on Manchester United defender Raphael Varane have aged badly.

Back in 2021, Frenchman Varane left Real Madrid for United in a deal worth a reported £41 million.

Since then, he has often been one of the first names on the team sheet when fully fit.

However, United boss Ten Hag has opted to play the likes of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans in recent matches.

Back in 2021, Gallas spoke about Varane when it was confirmed that Arsenal had completed the signing of Ben White from Brighton and Hove Albion for a reported fee of £50 million.

The Frenchman told Genting Casino: “It’s difficult for me to understand why Arsenal spent £50million on a player who is yet to prove himself at the top level and at the same time Manchester United can spend around £40million on Varane.

“You have to explain to me how it’s possible. Perhaps it’s partly because Ben White is English.”

Gallas continued: “Varane is a different class player compared to Ben White. Ben White is still young. As I said, he hasn’t proved anything yet. How can you put a £50million price on him, you know?”

However, those comments have aged badly as White has impressed at Arsenal whilst Varane finds himself on the fringes in recent times at United.

Speaking about White on social media, one Arsenal fan said: “Remember when Ben White was supposedly ‘average’ and ‘overrated’ and Raphael Varane was meant to be the best centre back in the league?”

Another tweeted: “Remember when Arsenal paid £50m for Ben White & Man U paid £38m for Varane? we got told that we had been ripped off & Varane was better value etc….

“One of them is being touted as a possible €25m sale in January. That’s a £17m loss in value in 30 months. Ben White is now worth £65m+.”

A third fan added: “Remember when you man laughed at me for saying Ben White would be a better investment than Varane.”
