Will Wednesday Be More Normal In Season 2? Why That’s A Good Thing

Good Wednesday #GoodWednesday

The first season of Netflix’s Wednesday thrilled audiences with its spooky mysteries and classic Addams Family’s creepiness, however, season 2 might just have to delve into the main character’s normalcy to make the new season just as unique and interesting. Wednesday is an Addams Family series starring Jenna Ortega as the notorious Wednesday Addams. The series has one season currently streaming on Netflix and a second currently in the works.

Wednesday season 1 didn’t hold back in showing just how odd Wednesday Addams is. Always dressed in black, the titular character loves a mystery just as much as she hates socializing and anything remotely normal. In this way, Wednesday is overwhelmingly unique, and watching her is always a thrill. It’s hard to guess what she’ll do next. However, as more of Wednesday is uncovered in season 2, it may be reasonable to try and find the more normal aspects of Wednesday to truly understand who she is as a person.

Though it may seem counterproductive to her character, showing how Wednesday is normal will actually make her an even more interesting character. After season 1, it’s clear that Wednesday is unlike anyone else, and her family is the same way. Therefore, the true secrets that lay beneath Wednesday’s dark exterior are the ways in which she is normal. Is it really possible that she is different and unique is every single aspect? If the answer is no, then it’s imperative that Wednesday season 2 shows us all aspects of her, both strange and normal.

Furthermore, Wednesday’s normal aspects are what connect her to the other outcasts at Wednesday’s Nevermore. Although they are all outcasts, they still have the basic elements of a normal teenager. For example, Enid is a werewolf, but she loves pink, drama, and knitting. Wednesday has already won the hearts of her Nevermore peers, but it’s important that they understand each other on a very basic, teenage level. What normal, everyday things does Wednesday enjoy that they would enjoy as well?

The key to unlocking Wednesday’s normalcy is by exploring both her past and her present. While Wednesday grew up in the strange house of the Addams Family, there must have been some aspects of her childhood that were regular. In Wednesday season 1, Wednesday remembers one of her birthday parties, and although it was still classically spooky, it still shows that the Addams have some normal traditions. In this way, it’s important to show the relatable parts of Wednesday’s past such as birthday parties, childhood best friends, family traditions, and the classic stepping stones of a normal American childhood.

Additionally, Wednesday’s present-day can show how she is normal. Now that she is no longer an outsider at Nevermore, Wednesday can form more meaningful relationships with her peers like what she has with Enid. More than that, it would be interesting to see how Wednesday is integrated with pop culture. While Wednesday seems to connect solely with gothic and vintage histories, it would elevate her character to see her interact with modern pop culture whether it’s music, movies, or celebrities. This could be as simple as the scene in season 1 when Tyler shows her Legally Blonde.

Aside from pop culture, Wednesday’s actual heritage is another aspect of her that is both normal and unique and should be explored in Wednesday season 2. As a Latinx character played by a Latinx actor, it would be a waste to create a show about Wednesday and not delve into her culture and how she celebrates it, along with her family. In this way, Wednesday’s heritage can be the most normal thing about her. The season could reveal details such as the foods the Addams eat, the music they listen to, and the holidays they celebrate.

Overall, by showing childhood milestones, connections to pop culture, and her Latinx heritage, Wednesday will become more normal, and in turn, more vulnerable- and understandable- to the audience. While Wednesday may break Addams Family canon in this way, it will ultimately make her a better character overall. Therefore, as much as Wednesday season 2 needs to increase its mystery and darkness, it also needs to dig deeper into its characters, and most of all, Wednesday. By revealing more of Wednesday’s character, the series will elevate itself and maintain the popularity it has already garnered for itself.
