  • Wilfried Zaha has distanced himself from a social media video in which the Crystal Palace star can be seen pointing at a ‘Zaha to Arsenal’ sign in a nightclub.

The Ivory Coast international was desperate to join the Gunners last summer but the club opted for Lille winger Nicholas Pepe after a deal could not be reached with the Crystal Palace winger.

But in footage uploaded to social media, it looks as though Zaha is still keen on joining his boyhood club.

In the footage which was first uploaded on Instagram, the 27-year-old is dancing in a nightclub and points at a neon sign on the wall which says ‘Zaha to Arsenal’.

The video also had the caption: ‘So me and @wilfriedzaha have a message for you guys @arsenal.’

That was followed up by another story in which he posts: ‘@arsenal if you don’t sign this man up you lot are f*****g stupid you know the price is easy in today’s market’.

Zaha has done his best to distance himself from the post saying: ‘I’m just trying to enjoy my time off and can’t control everything everyone does.’

Anthony Billing, the Instagram user who posted the story on his social media page also attempted to quash the speculation raised from the video.

He said: ‘I can confirm that @wilfriedzaha had no partake in the banter last night. It was just a joke that I decided to go ahead with.’

Billing himself also said that Zaha had no involvement and that it was just 'banter'

Zaha has since said it was an ‘amazing’ feeling to be linked with his boyhood club even though they moved for a different transfer target in Pepe.

The 27-year-old has a tougher season after he wasn’t granted his wish of leaving Selhurst Park and managed just four goals in 39 appearances for the Eagles last season.

He is still contracted at Selhurst Park until 2023 though speculation of a move to Arsenal has returned since the transfer window re-opened.

And speaking after Palace’s final game of the season against Tottenham, Eagles boss Roy Hodgson admitted his star player was set on a move away from Selhurst Park.

Hodgson said: ‘Wilf has made it clear ever since I came to the club, really, that he would like to move on and find some pastures new.

‘But he’s a very valuable player and the club realises his value and appreciates his value and so really everything will depend I guess – as it always does – [on] what sort of offers the club is going to receive for him and how they will equate that with the need to keep him or the need, maybe, to satisfy his wishes, and allow him to go after giving good service to the club for a period of time.’

Everton were also interested in Zaha last summer, but both them and Arsenal stumbled over Crystal Palace’s £80m asking price.

The uncertainty stemming from the coronavirus crisis has disrupted transfer business this summer, and it remains to be seen whether clubs will return with large offers for Zaha by the end of the transfer window.
