The NHL All-Star Skills competition is tonight, which means the most talented hockey players in the world get to display their talents.

It’s not just the stars from the NHL either. Five women’s hockey players, including Team Canada’s Sarah Nurse, will be in South Florida for the 2023 NHL ALL-Star Skills event.

Nurse is joined by fellow Team Canada members Emily Clark and Rebecca Johnston and Team USA’s Hilary Knight and Alex Carpenter as the women partaking in the events on Friday.

For those hockey fans who are also avid gamers, Nurse is likely a familiar face. She was the co-cover athlete on NHL 23 alongside Ducks forward Trevor Zegras, becoming the first female athlete to be featured on the cover of an NHL video game.

Here are more details on Nurse and her involvement at the 2023 All-Star Weekend.

Who is Sarah Nurse?

Nurse is a member of Canada’s national women’s hockey team. The native of Hamilton earned gold in 2022, and she also earned silver with Team Canada in 2018 during the PyeongChang Olympics.

Nurse also owns three medals from World Championships. She helped Canada to bronze in 2019 and then secured her first World Championship gold in 2021 with the team. Canada and Nurse defended their gold medal in 2022.

She is also an independent member of the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA), one of the women’s professional hockey leagues in North America. In addition, Nurse is a board member of the organization.

Nurse played college hockey for four years at the University of Wisconsin. As a Badger, Nurse helped the team win the WCHA Championship, scoring two goals on the way to defeating Bemidji State.

Why is Sarah Nurse at the 2023 NHL All-Star Skills event?

In 2019, the NHL began inviting women hockey players to their All-Star Weekend.

USA’s Kendall Coyne Schofield and Brianna Decker, in addition to Canada’s Renata Fast and Rebecca Johnston, made an appearance at the 2019 All-Star Skills night, highlighted by Coyen Schofield’s sensational showing in the Fastest Skater competition.

Since then, women’s hockey players have been featured at every event. There was a women’s 3-on-3 game in 2020 with Canadian and American All-Star squads, and in 2022, Jocelyne Lamoureux Davidson and Manon Rheaume made appearances in the skills competition. There was no All-Star Weekend in 2021 due to the delayed start of the season.

Nurse is among those that were invited to this year’s festivities.

Is Sarah Nurse related to Darnell Nurse?

The two Canadian athletes don’t just share the same last name. The two are first cousins, as Darnell’s father, Richard, and Sarah’s father, Roger, are brothers.

Darnell isn’t the only star athlete Sarah has for a cousin. Sarah is also cousins with Kia Nurse, the WNBA point guard for the Phoenix Mercury, as Kia and Darnell are siblings.
