Alongside his name, cops also released a photo of the suspect – who was wearing a brown sweatshirt as the violence erupted.
Card was described by a Maine law enforcement bulletin on Fox News Digital as a “trained firearms instructor believed to be in the Army Reserve stationed out of Saco, ME”.
It noted how Card had recently said he had been suffering with mental health issues.
These included “hearing voices and threats to shoot up the National Guard Base in Saco, ME”, Fox News reported.
Card was committed to a mental health facility for two weeks earlier this year, the authorities confirmed.
The bulletin added that as such, Card should be considered “armed and dangerous”.
As well Card being the police’s main target, a “vehicle of interest” was found in Lisbon, Maine – which is believed to be linked to the suspected shooter.
While reports have varied on how many people have died due to the shooting, Central Maine Medical Center said it was dealing with a “mass casualty, mass shooter event” but numbers were not yet attainable.
The shootings erupted at three restaurants across Lewiston: Schemengees Bar and Grille Restaurant, a Walmart store and Sparetime Recreation.
Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office shared pictures of the suspect wearing a brown sweatshirt and holding a rifle, while residents were told to “stay inside your home with the doors locked”.
FBI Boston added in a post on X, formerly Twitter: “The FBI Boston Division continues to coordinate with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners in Maine, and we stand ready to assist with any available resources they need, including evidence response, investigative and tactical support, as well as victim assistance.
“We continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any and all suspicious activity and/or individuals to law enforcement immediately. As this situation is still very fluid, we have no further comment at this time and will refer you to the Maine State Police.”
