Who is David Lammy’s wife and children? MP goes viral after LBC Radio caller claims he’s “not English”

In March 2021, during an appearance on LBC Radio, David Lammy was forced to explain to a caller that he is, in fact, English after she insisted that he was not.

David Lammy is a British Labour Party MP for Tottenham and has served as Shadow Secretary of State for Justice in Keir Starmer’s Shadow Cabinet since 2020.

Whilst on LBC Radio, a caller known as “Jean” told David Lammy that he will “never be English” because he is “African- Caribbean.”

David Lammy’s wife is Nicola Green, a British portrait painter.

Nicola and David have been married since 2005 and share three children together.

Nicola is a famous portrait artist and among her subjects are the Dalai Lama, Barack Obama, and Elle Macpherson.

Her website states: “Inspired by her own mixed-heritage children and multi-faith family, she creates and preserves religious, social, and cultural heritage for future generations.”

In 2020, Nicola founded the Khadija Saye IntoArts Programme in memory of her mentee and friend, artist Khadija Saye who was killed in the Grenfell Tower fire. The programme addresses the issue of BAME representation in the creative industries.

David Lammy forced to explain that he is English during call- in on LBC

While appearing on LBC Radio to discuss Boris Johnson’s racial disparity commission’s call to scrap the term “BAME”, David Lammy, the Shadow Justice Secretary, took calls from listeners.

One caller, Jean, told David that he will “never be English” because he is “African- Caribbean.”

David responded: “Britain 400 years ago started going out into the world, colonised and conquered a lot of the world, a lot of the world has ended up coming back to the mother country…when I took a DNA test I had Scottish in me.”

“Here I am, having grown up in this country, born of this country, and actually the truth is there’s a myth there’s one English ethnicity, there’s not.”

Caller claims David Lammy is “not English”

Jean insisted that David is “British but not English,” and stated that world movement is “pollution.”

David replied calmly, stating: “People meet one another, they fall in love, they have kids, they move borders – sometimes through war, sometimes through economic reasons – and they become what they become when they are of that country.”

“Just as you can be in America and be African-American, or you can be Italian-American, or you can be Irish-American, how is it that here in England, you can only claim that Englishness if you are white?”
