Where is Perugia and did Boris Johnson secretly visit the Italian city?

On September 17, La Repubblica, an Italian newspaper, claimed that Boris Johnson visited the city of Perugia ’in the last few days’.

A source from San Francesco d’Assisi airport told the newspaper that the Prime Minister landed on Friday, September 11 at 2.00 pm.

Number 10 informed La Repubblica that ‘this claim is wrong’, and then released a statement claiming the story is ‘completely untrue’.

Where is Perugia?

Perugia is a city in central Italy, halfway between Florence and Rome.

The city is the capital of Umbria region, and lies in cluster of hills overlooking the Umbrian and central Tiber valleys and Lake Trasimeno.

Perugia is known for its art and culture, and boasts an impressive amount of beautiful churches and large museums. It also has its own chocolate factory.

The city is surrounded by stunning scenery and national parks.

Monica Bellucci, an Italian actor who starred in Spectre and The Matrix Reloaded, is from Perugia.

Additionally, the famous murder of British student Meredith Kercher and the ensuing Amanda Knox case took place in Perugia.

This time of year, Perugia enjoys temperatures in the mid 20s.

Did Boris Johnson secretly visit the city?

According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited the city on September 11.

However, Downing Street have dismissed these claims as false.

It is unlikely that Mr Johnson was in Perugia that weekend.

On September 11, Boris was busy dealing with backlash from MPs over his international law-breaking Brexit legislation.

The PM and fiancee Carrie Symonds also reportedly baptised their son Wilfred that weekend.
