When should you book Thanksgiving travel? AAA says as soon as possible

Travel experts say most people are purchasing Thanksgiving-related flights now — even though the holiday is seven weeks away — and expectations are high that “this year will see heavy holiday travel,” according to AAA.

Planning this far out can give an advantage to those looking to fly, rent cars, and stay in hotels, AAA said in a Friday statement. TSA reported screening 2.3 million passengers the Sunday after Thanksgiving in 2021, nearly double the amount from the year before.

When should people book their airfare?

“The time is now. It’s yesterday, it’s today, it’s tomorrow, it’s as soon as possible,” said Anne Lischwe, travel sales manager for AAA Northeast, who recommends being flexible with dates as it could lead to lower prices and taking a look at international trips as most people travel domestically.

AAA says there may be a chance to save money if people wait until closer to the holiday to book tickets.

“The risk there is that inventory may be limited, and preferred times or nonstop flights may be sold out,” the organization said. “Flight delays or other disruptions are still possible, and travelers are strongly advised to arm themselves with information and protection to minimize or eliminate stressful situations that can negatively impact a trip.”

Where are people heading this year? AAA says these are the top ten destinations for Thanksgiving:

  • Orlando, Florida
  • Boston, Massachusetts
  • Las Vegas, Nevada
  • Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • Maui, Hawaii
  • Tampa, Florida
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Miami, Florida
  • Washington D.C.
