When Is Serena Williams Next Playing at U.S. Open?

Having beaten Danka Kovinić in their first round showdown at the the 2022 U.S. Open on Sunday, Serena Williams faces a tough task in her next match.

After winning 6-3, 6-3 against Montenegro’s Kovinić, next up for 40-year-old is second seed Anett Kontaveit.

On Tuesday, August 9 Williams said in a Vogue interview that she was “evolving away from tennis” and that the U.S. Open would be her last tournament.

So heading into the second round, here is everything you need to know about Williams’ forthcoming match.

Williams is due to return to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to face Kontaveit on Wednesday. A specific time for their match has not yet been confirmed by the tournament organizers.

The match will be available to watch on ESPN, which is the exclusive home of the tennis tournament. The event is being screened on TV via ESPN and ESPN2, and is streaming live on ESPN3, ESPN+ and the ESPN App.

On Wednesday, the second round matches for both singles and doubles on all 16 courts will be available to watch on ESPN+ from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET.

ESPN will show second round matches from noon to 7 p.m. ET, at which point contests in the “prime time” spot, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET, will be screened on ESPN 2. Williams’ match is likely to take place during this evening slot.

Following her first round victory, Williams told CBS Morning’s Gayle King that the crowd was so animated that it “really helped pull [her] through,” adding, “I was really pumped. I was like, ‘Yes, I got this.'”

Kontaveit, who won her first round match against Jaqueline Adina Cristian 6-3, 6-0 on Monday, said she was looking forward to playing against Williams.

Following her first round win, the Estonian said of Williams: “I’m really excited. I was really rooting for her to win today. I’ve never played against her. I mean, this is the last chance. Better late than never.

“I’m really excited. I think the atmosphere is going to be amazing. I’m really looking forward to it…I’ll just get to enjoy and play as good as I can on the day.

“I don’t feel like there is any pressure on me on the results or anything. I’m just going to take it as a real unique experience. I’m not sure if I’ll ever experience something like this again. I think it’s a special moment for her.”
