Conscription into the South Korean army is a legal requirement of all male citizens aged 18-28; they typically serve for 18-21 months. The service is mandatory in response to the armistice agreement with North Korea, where the two neighbouring countries are still technically at war.
Typically, only medallists are exempted from the duties, meaning thatK-pop idols are required to serve.
There was debate on whether BTS will serve in the army given their huge contribution to spreading K-pop worldwide in the last two years. Ultimately, the group will have to enlist eventually.
When is Xiumin back in EXO?
SM Entertainment announced that Xiumin will be officially discharged from the army on December 6, however since he is currently on final leave, he will not need to return to the army to finish to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
So technically, Xiumin is already a free man!
What are fans saying on Twitter?
Obviously, EXO-L’s are excited to have their rapper and vocalist back, especially since Chen just left for his service.
