What’s open, what’s closed on Columbus Day 2022
Columbus #Columbus
Monday is Columbus Day, the federal holiday commemorating Christopher Columbus’s landing in the Americas.
Columbus Day falls on the second Monday of October each year.
While the holiday serves as a celebration for Italian Americans, it is also a reminder of the country’s ugly past.
Initially created to celebrate Columbus’s achievement, perceptions about the federal holiday have changed over the years. Due in part to the controversy surrounding Columbus, many alternatives to the holiday have been proposed since the 1970s, including Indigenous People’s Day, which is now celebrated in many U.S. states and cities.
However, to the general public, this means that we can expect to see U.S. Post Offices and government buildings being closed. Typically, retail and grocery stores will remain open, but hours may be affected. Please check with your local retailer.
Here’s what’s open and closed on Columbus Day 2022:
Banks: Individual banks differ, but most are closed.
Federal offices: Closed.
Post offices: Closed.
