‘What’s he stopped for?’ – Jamie Carragher dumbfounded by Darwin Nunez moment

Jamie Carragher was left baffled by Darwin Nunez after letting up a chance as Liverpool looked to take the lead against Manchester United.

But Erik ten Hag’s men have frustrated the Reds largely in their own yard – largely due to their own attacking mistakes.

That includes a chance for Nunez at a moment when Andre Onana and three defenders were left on the deck.

As the ball trickled out of play, the Liverpool star let it run over the line, calling for a penalty for a challenge on Luiz Diaz, instead of busting a gut to get there.

Speaking on co-commentary for Sky Sports, Carragher was incensed.

“What’s Nunez stopped for?” he vented. “Just run across goal and put it into an empty net!”

The incident came about after Onana had come out of his goal to smash one in the stands before Mohamed Salah took a quick throw.

With United scrambling to get back, Luis Diaz burrowed down on goal with gaps in defence.

Jonny Evans managed to block the shot, which left several players in a heap before Nunez decided against chasing down the loose ball.

Moments later, Jurgen Klopp took the Uruguay international off and replaced him with Curtis Jones.

It made little impact, though, as Liverpool failed to capitalise on their domination as the match ended 0-0.

It means that Arsenal remain top of the table after their 2-0 win over Brighton earlier in the day.

And it also gave Ten Hag some breathing space after many considered United on their way to a demolition job.

The same fixture ended 7-0 last season and a repeat might have been on the cards, especially considering United’s injury list.

But to get a point and a clean sheet are big positives for the Red Devils.
