What to expect if we get a seventh series of Line Of Duty including more from James Nesbitt

Writer Jed Mercurio is keeping tight lipped about how Line of Duty might return – or even if.
But the explosive finale of the popular drama gave us some clues about what to expect…
AC-12 – THE UNHAPPY ENDING
Yes, they found the fourth man. But frankly they lost the battle… which could point to a plot line for the next series.
The show ended with Ian Buckells – the fourth copper in cahoots with organised crime – seeking immunity, and if successful no evidence relating to institutional corruption will be heard in court.
The finale also bowed out with the clear conclusion that AC-12 was on the outs. But we just can’t see Kate, Steve and the Gaffer ever letting it lie. And here’s why.

KATE LOVES STEVE!
In what is perhaps even bigger than the fourth man reveal is the major hint that Kate loves Steve.
They may call each other ‘mate’ but does Kate want more? In the final scenes in the pub congratulating each other on a job well done, Kate says she might come back to AC-12, and locking eyes with Steve, she said: “You don’t realise what you’ve got until it’s gone.”
Then it cut to her talking to the police psych about the importance of supportive colleagues, and Kate says: “Yeah I’m lucky working with one of the best. To be honest I don’t know what I’d do without him.”
For chilly Kate this is a massive outpouring of emotion.
WILL ‘THE GAFFER’ RETIRE?

It did look at times in the finale that the Gaffer was a broken man, and wants to cry and just go home to his mammy. Brilliantly played by Adrian Dunbar, his eyes were rimmed red and he looked utterly defeated. Poor man.
But he is going to fight his compulsory retirement. And that man knows how to keep on fighting.
“No one makes mugs out of AC-12,” he swore.
A ROLE FOR JAMES NESBITT…?
James Nesbitt has made no secret of his wish to be in Line of Duty but making one of TV’s biggest stars just appear in a photo and then… dead? Surely there would be more to it… and fans are convinced Marcus Thurwell may still be alive.

In the finale, the bodies found strangled in the Spanish apartment had been formally identified as Marcus and his wife.
So ‘definately’ dead. Or is he… Could series seven be a prequel and Nesbitt bag that role in the end?
BUCKELLS DIDN’T CONFESS!

Obviously it has been a series all about “No comments” in the famous interrogation glass box.
But Buckells excelled at this and replied “No comment” when Hastings asked: “Once wrongly code named H – now referred to the fourth man – Ian Buckells are you the fourth man?”
Steve asked Buckells: “Who is the top man – you?”
And Buckells said he just passed on orders from the OCG.
Seems to us that Kate and Steve’s celebratory drink in the pub was a bit premature.
