What time do liquor stores close on Christmas Eve? Is parking free in Harrisburg?

If you have business to attend to the day before Christmas, you might want to do it early.

Some places will close early on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24, 2020, and most places are closed on Christmas Day. Grocery stores are closing early, too.

Here is a rundown of what we were able to determine regarding hours the day before Christmas.

  • Banks: open but some may close early.
  • Capital Area Transit: No service after 7 p.m. on Dec. 24. The Route 3/6 night loop will not be in service.
  • County offices: Adams, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties are open Dec. 24, Cumberland County is closed.
  • Federal government and courts: The Ronald Reagan Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Harrisburg will be closed Dec. 24.
  • Libraries: Dauphin County, Cumberland County, Lebanon County Library System Lebanon and Matthews, Hershey and Middletown Public Libraries, closed.
  • Municipal government: Derry Twp., Hummelstown, Lower Paxton Twp., and Susquehanna Twp. will close at noon. Those closed include Carlisle, Harrisburg, Middletown, Middlesex Twp. and Silver Spring Twp. (Keep in mind some municipal offices are closed to walk-in traffic or open by appointment-only because of the coronavirus.)
  • Parking in Harrisburg: free Dec. 24 and 25.
  • PennDOT: Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Driver License and Photo License Centers statewide: The Riverfront Office Center in Harrisburg, which is only open for motor vehicle transactions, will close at 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 24. Driver license and photo center locations will close at 12:15 p.m. on Dec. 24.
  • Post offices: open but the U.S. Postal Service said some locations may have longer hours or close early, you should check with your local post office. Regarding the blue mail collection boxes, “For mail pickup Dec. 24, customers are asked to put their mail into blue collection boxes by noon regardless of the final collection times posted on the box.”
  • Public schools: closed.
  • Rabbittransit: Paratransit and York fixed route service will end at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 24 as will Route 33. The call center will close at 6 p.m. Dec. 24. Gettysburg Fixed Route is closed Dec. 24. Stop Hopper service ends at 6:30 p.m. The customer service center closes at 10 a.m.
  • State liquor stores: All stores will close by 6 p.m. Dec. 24.
  • State offices: open.
  • Retail stores: Some will close early. Convenience stores such as Sheetz, Wawa, Rutter’s, 7-Eleven and Turkey Hill will be open.
  • Trash collection: Penn Waste, Waste Management and Republic Services will run as normal.
