Pep Guardiola was involved in a series of angry exchanges on the touchline on Sunday afternoon as Manchester City slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.
The City boss was clearly aggravated by referee Anthony Taylor’s decision to disallow Phil Foden’s goal, with VAR intervening to award a foul against Erling Haaland in the build-up. This riled up Guardiola and in turn the Anfield crowd, with the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss turning to address the crowd.
Sky Sports’ Melissa Reddy suggested he was repeating ‘This is Anfield’ while playing up to the crowd behind him. The Spaniard’s frustration was only added to by a 76th-minute winner from Mohamed Salah to end City’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Guardiola and his coaching staff were out of their seats regularly as the game heated up, with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp sent to the stands after being red-carded for dissent. However, one major talking point as City leave Anfield are the Blues’ allegations that coins were thrown in the direction of Pep Guardiola during the match.
Guardiola referred to the Blues’ coach being attacked outside Anfield in 2018 saying: “Next time they will do it better. They didn’t get me. They tried but didn’t get me. They got it on the coach years ago but not this time.”
There were also reports of chants emanating from the away section at Anfield, with references to previous tragedies involving Liverpool fans, with the Reds releasing a statement which has been acknowledged by City, saying: “We are working with the relevant authorities and we will also work with Manchester City in order to do our utmost to ensure these chants are eradicated from football altogether.”
