Amidst the chaos of the start of a war in Israel, pundits and observers were quick to point out Canada’s exclusion from a joint statement on Sunday from its major allies on the rapidly escalating conflict.

Critics of the Trudeau government pointed to the omission as a sign of Canada’s deteriorating place on the global stage, in the wake of Ottawa’s explosive claim that India was behind the killing of a Sikh activist in the Vancouver area.

The statement came from five of the G7 members — the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and France. Only Canada and Japan were excluded. It said that Hamas’ attacks on Israel over the weekend had “no justification, no legitimacy, and must be universally condemned.”
