What Happened Overnight in Israel and Palestinian Territories

Israel’s army said Sunday it regained control over southern areas but is still searching parts of the country for Hamas militants. The army also exchanged mortar fire with Hezbollah on Israel’s northern border and warned the Lebanese militant group against becoming involved in the conflict with Hamas.

Israel closed roads and crossing points in and out of the West Bank and Palestinian areas of Jerusalem, Palestinian media reported. Israel also launched hundreds of airstrikes on Gaza, retaliating against a barrage of more than 3,500 rockets fired from the strip. Thousands of Palestinians in Gaza have fled their homes, with some seeking shelter in schools, in anticipation of a broader retaliation as Israel says it is still formulating its longer-term response.
