What Does WandaVision’s Evan Peters Quicksilver X-Men Cameo Mean For The MCU?

Well, WandaVision’s fifth episode aired today, and if you have arrived at this article, you probably knew what to Google or were spoiler warned already, so there’s no point doing all that again.

Today’s episode of WandaVision has confirmed a rumor that was previously too far-out to be believed, that it would have a huge cameo not from an existing MCU character, but from…well, another universe entirely.

The premise of WandaVision is her reconstructing an idealized version of her life, married to a now-alive Vision and having twin boys with him. But now that has extended to bringing her brother Pietro (Quicksilver) back to life after he was killed by Ultron.

Well, sort of.

Pietro returns, but “recast” as Darcy Lewis says. Originally in the MCU, Pietro was played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but here, he’s been recast with Evan Peters.

Even Peters…who played Quicksilver in several FOX X-Men movies, X-Men Apocalypse, Days of Future Past and Dark Phoenix.

Whoa.

This is the first significant time the FOX X-Men universe has collided with Marvel’s MCU, as both are now technically under Disney’s umbrella. We knew that the MCU would add in mutants and the X-Men eventually. But now? Like this? I think we shouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves.

I think it’s possible that rather than some sort of mega-crossover indicating we’re about to see Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman show up next, that this may instead by more of a meta joke and nod to the FOX X-Men universe instead.

For instance, we saw in this week’s episode that Wanda literally stole Vision’s corpse before coming to Westview, and apparently reassembled him and brought him back to life. And everyone in Westview, outside of her children, it seems, are actual, real people that she has taken over to act out as characters in her show.

The same may be true for Even Peters’ Pietro here. Rather than opening up some interdimensional rift to the FOX universe, Wanda may have simply taken another person and brainwashed him into becoming her brother, even though she seems clearly caught off guard by his arrival. He could be the “witness protection” person that Agent Jimmy Woo was there to find in the first place.

One other theory is that Peters could be playing an outside force, a villain and rogue element, disguised as her brother, so Wanda doesn’t have to be the bad guy of her own show (Mephisto, perhaps?)

Of course he just…could actually be FOX Quicksilver. After all, we are heading toward a “multiverse” era of the MCU, and considering Spider-Man is bringing in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Men to join Tom Holland, Evan Peters’ FOX Quicksilver appearing doesn’t really sound much more wild than that. So anything’s possible.

Whatever the case, it’s a wild development, and yes, after this week promising something akin to a “Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian” cameo, I have to say I was even more hyped to see Peters than I was CGI Luke on that show. Four episodes left and I cannot wait to see what’s next.
