Wiarton Willie says we’ll have an early spring this year.
The groundhog did not see its shadow this morning (Friday, Feb. 2), and if the Groundhog Day prediction holds true, that means we’ll have an early spring this year.
Willie has been predicting the weather every year on Feb. 2 since 1957.
The Bruce County groundhog is certainly the most famous of Canada’s groundhogs, but not the only one.
Over in nearby Lambton County, there’s Harvey, who resides at Heaven’s Wildlife Rescue Rehabilitation & Education Centre.
Harvey did see its shadow this morning, which would indicate six more weeks of winter.
Over in Nova Scotia, Shubenacadie Sam, another famous Canadian groundhog, did not see her shadow this morning, indicating an early spring.
In Quebec, Fred la Marmotte has predicted an early spring.
And the most famous of all the groundhogs, Punxsutawney Phil, who has been predicting the weather in Pennsylvania since the late 1800s, also predicted an early spring.
