Can you help the rest of us break out of the algorithms box?

There’s no doubt that the YouTube algorithm tends to slowly but surely box folks into a slim but specific group of content. That’s a bit sad considering the plethora of exceptional video content available from small-time creators. With that in mind, we’re wondering if you can recommend some underrated gems from the automotive YouTube world that deserve more viewership.

In the past, we’ve seen some pretty small channels blossom into real juggernauts with our lead image, the guys from Mighty Car Mods, being just one example. They started off as a tiny little channel that worked from their driveway that is now one of the most well-known channels around the world.

So that should give you some idea of what we’re looking for. A channel with a fairly low subscriber count but with top-notch content that’s genuine, fun, possibly educational, and above all, entertaining. Other platforms are fine but YouTube creators get top billing here as it’s a widely available platform that most folks can watch pretty much anywhere, including at home, on their TV.

Wesley Kagan probably falls into this category as an underrated automotive YouTuber. He’s the guy that built his own totally functional version of Koenigsegg’s Freevalve system and then installed it in a Mazda Miata. He also put a Porsche Boxster engine into a 1960s-style F1 chassis. More recently, he dropped a V8 into a Triumph racecar and built a V12 coffee table that we told you about a few months ago.

My vote goes to Engines and Unfinished Business, a channel dedicated mostly to restoring a 1993 Toyota MR2. Unlike many other automotive YouTubers, the hosts, Sophie and Matt, seem to be genuinely fun and unconcerned with the algorithm. On top of that, they show off some awesome DIY tips along the way.
