West Brom suffer Burnley blow after Semi Ajayi is sent off

Semi Ajayi was sent off for West Brom after half an hour of their meeting with Burnley at Turf Moor this afternoon.

The centre half was adjudged to have handled the ball to deny Clarets striker Matej Vydra from running through and being one on one with goalkeeper Sam Johnstone after a sloppy pass back from Conor Gallagher.

Referee Mike Dean, who initially ignored the cries from the Burnley players, was instructed by his VAR colleagues to consult the monitor and make the decision having seen the incident again with his own eyes.

After a couple of moments watching replays of various angles, Dean summoned Ajayi and fetched the red card from his back pocket.

Ajayi will now miss one match, the welcoming of Brighton to The Hawthorns next weekend.

Sam Allardyce reshuffled his pack following the sending off by bringing on centre half Dara O’Shea for winger Matt Phillips.

The club’s other centre back Branislav Ivanovic isn’t a part of the match-day squad today and Cedric Kipre was loaned out to Charleroi in Belgium on transfer deadline day.

Albion had been competing in an even contest up until that stage with Burnley, who have former Baggies Vydra and Jay Rodriguez in attack.
