‘We showed who effed whom’ – Croatia revel in revenge by thrashing Canada in World Cup, after press mocked boss John Herdman up naked

Croatia enjoyed sending Canada and their boss John Herdman home early after being stung by his comments.

The 2018 World Cup finalists eased to a 4-1 victory over Canada on Sunday at the Khalifa International Stadium after Bayern Munich winger Alphonso Davies put Herdman’s side ahead after only 68 seconds, to score the quickest goal at the tournament so far.

And he hadn’t forgotten Herdman’s rallying cry to his players after the first group game, which they lost to Belgium

Croatian news outlet Sata 24 mocked Canada manager Herdman and asked if he could back up his claims

But Croatia hit back with Andrej Kramaric scoring twice and the former Leicester man and his boss, Zlatko Dalic, were seething after Durham-born Herdman decided to head down the tunnel at full-time, rather than shake the hand of the Croatia manager.

“I’d like to thank the Canada manager for motivation. In the end, Croatia showed who ‘effed’ who,” Kramaric said in reference to Herdman post-match comments after his side lost to Belgium in their first game.

After seeing his side narrowly lose, he revealed: “I told them they belong here. And we’re going to go and ‘eff’ Croatia.”

Croatian tabloid 24 Sata then decided to Photoshop Herdman’s face onto a naked body with just two Canadian maple leaves covering his mouth and groin.

The headline read: “You have the mouth, but do you have the balls as well?”

Herdman’s word certainly left Dalic seething prior to the clash, who said his side demanded more respect.

Dalic was left unhappy with Herdman’s pre-game comments

“The Croatian team deserves respect from everyone. We have proven that by the way we played and our conduct during the World Cup,” Dalic said pre-match.

“Since the very beginning, we have deserved respect and dignity. We have two medals in the last 30 years. Only Germany and France have such achievements.

“We respect everyone equally so we expect opposing teams to respect us. We are worthy of their respect. The Canadians must have respect for us.

“This way of putting words together is not a sign of respect. We are [World Cup] runners-up.

Herdman will now try and guide Canada to a first win at the 2022 World Cup

“We are second in the world and we are worthy of respect in the way we play, behave and respect all others. They are the reasons why we are worthy of respect.

“I shall not focus on the comments. We will be prepared and fit and demonstrate respect for Canada.”

And they were with a second successive defeat confirming Canada’s exit in their first appearance at the finals since 1986.

“I could have been a little more composed coming out of the huddle. That is my learning. I will take that on the chin,” Herdman said.

Canada now have the chance to win their first game of the tournament on Thursday.

“We’ve got a big game coming up against Morocco, a huge game for Canada in the sense of there’s a lot for us to play for,” he added.
