We All Deserve a Break After Harry Styles’s Sweltering Grammys Performance

In the year of our lord, 2021, there is no better way the Grammys could have decided to kick off “Music’s Biggest Night,” than with Harry Styles, leather, a boa, and “Watermelon Sugar.”

After a brief opening monologue from host Trevor Noah, Styles began the evening with a sultry version of his mega hit, “Watermelon Sugar.” Styles strutted around the stage shirtless with a black leather blazer and matching pants, showing off a little skin as he tossed the boa aside. His backing band included Blood Orange’s Devonté Hynes on bass.

“Watermelon Sugar” has had an insane shelf life over the past few months. As the fourth single from his critically acclaimed 2019 album, Fine Line, the track was officially released last May and became Styles’s first solo number one single.

Styles is a three-time nominee for the 2021 awards, nabbing nominations for Music Video, Pop Vocal Album, and—of course—Pop Solo Performance for “Watermelon Sugar.” Though he lost Music Video earlier in the evening to Beyoncé, the category for which his critically acclaimed Fine Line is nominated, along with the Pop Solo performance, will be decided later in the night.

There are still performances and awards to be handed out ahead, but no one will blame you from taking a long break after that sweltering Styles performance. If anything, the other performers and nominees should blame the Grammys producers for scheduling that Styles performance first in the night.
