Watch These Bodybuilders Try Old School Workouts From the ’80s and ’90s

The YouTube fitness duo bodybuilders the Buff Dudes, which consists of brothers Brandon and Hudson White, are back with another hilarious video highlighting retro workouts. Back in June, they tried out exercises from the 1940s. Now, they’ve time warped to later in the 20th century to try five routines from the 1980s and 1990s.

Workout 1: The Marky Mark Workout

Marky Mark, a.k.a. MH cover mainstay Mark Wahlberg in his rap years, put out a workout video in 1993.

“This workout consists of sketchy form, short range of motion, an aversion to shaking hands, and lots and lots of wardrobe changes,” the Dudes say to introduce the video.

For the program, Wahlberg showed off pullups, weighted lunges, deadlifts, bench rows, concentration curls, and lots of moves on machines.

“I don’t know if his pullup form is really that good. His range of motion is a little short,” says Brandon.

The weighted lunges also have some issues. In the video, Wahlberg instructs, ‘Do not have your knees go past your ankles.’

“…yet their knees are going past their ankles,” says Hudson. “And that’s okay honestly! As long as your feet are flat on the floor.”

The guys give their verdict: Bad Vibrations.

Workout 2: The Fabio Workout

This workout was released in 1993 by romance novel cover model Fabio.

“This workout consists of plenty of staring, lots of hip gyration, gratuitous nipple slips and and an insistence on wearing a weight belt at all times,” the Dudes say.

“He’s a little like Marky Mark, he’s a little infatuated with his woman training partner,” says Hudson.

“He’s not instructing you, but he’s giving you the goods, and for a lot of people I’m sure that’s what was important,” says Brandon.

Fabio does include some dumbbell pullovers, a solid move—but the Dudes note that they’re “still not sure it justifies the weight belt.”

Workout 3: Reebok’s ‘The Step’ Workout

This video interests the Dudes more than than the others, which is clear from their synopsis: “Released in 1992 and starring a group of futuristic fitness warriors, Step presents a dystopian world in which armies prepare for combat using high-intensity cardio-based workouts with attractive fitness models.”

As the Dudes break down the video, they explain its appeal.

“It reminds me of mid-’80s Ridley Scott—you’ve got live drums, amazing cinematography, you have a nefarious host who only shows herself on TV screen monitors,” says Brandon.

“I really am thinking this is a futuristic military training to be a deadly assassin, with Reebok-branded clothes,” adds Hudson.

After trying it out, they decide it’s tough. “Step stepped all over us.”

Workout 4: The Jazzercise Workout

This dance-themed routine is still popular today—but the video routine the Dudes use is very much of the past.

“It looks pretty intense. This looks like something that takes some practice and some talent,” says Hudson. “The hip movement, the arms, You gotta look like you know what you’re doing or else it looks like you’re flailing around like a fish out of water.”

“This is the one you’ve got to commit to the most,” says Brandon.

They give it a shot, and decide that “our hands don’t have jazz.”

Workout 5: The Muscle Motion Workout

This routine gets racy. “Released in 1983 is a tie-in for the Chippendales Male Striptease Dancing Group. This workout consists of sultry female voice overs, ungroomed men, and well…you’ve got to see it to believe it,” the Dudes say.

After watching just the warmup, the guys let out a resounding, “Nope.”
