The No. 1 golfer in the world ended Day 3 of the U.S. Open in style.

Scottie Scheffler, lingering around the top 10 all weekend at Los Angeles Country Club, had a stellar finish to his round Saturday with an eagle on 17 and a birdie on 18 to finish the day at 2-under 68, leaving him in fourth place at 7-under heading into the final round.

Scheffler’s eagle, a 197-yard hole-out from the 17th fairway, was the highlight:

Scheffler had shot even through the first 15 holes of his third round with three birdies and three bogeys before bogeying again on 16. He responded with the epic shot on 17 then a birdie putt from 22 feet on 18, wrapping up his day with a nice 3-under on the final two holes.

Scheffler, who’s never won the U.S. Open but finished tied for second place in 2022, will challenge once again on Sunday, which is nothing new for him. Since 2021, out of a possible 43 major championship rounds, Scheffler has been ranked inside the top 10 at the conclusion of 27 of them.

Scheffler will still have ground to make up on Ricky Fowler and Wyndham Clark, who see-sawed between first and second place most of Saturday, but Scheffler is assuredly within striking distance for Sunday.
