Watch: Jesús Ferreira nets crucial extra time goal for USMNT vs. Panama in Gold Cup semis

Ferreira #Ferreira

Jesús Ferreira’s heater continues for the U.S. Men’s National Team at the Gold Cup.

First, Ferreira became the first American to score international hat tricks in consecutive games in USMNT Gold Cup matches vs. St. Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago. Then he added a goal in the penalty kick shootout of the quarterfinal game against Canada.

And he may have saved their Gold Cup chances on Wednesday night with another goal, this time a 105th-minute equalizer against Panama in the semifinal match.

The U.S. trailed 1-0 after a 99th-minute goal by Ivan Anderson of Panama, the teams having played to a scoreless tie to that point. That sent Ferreira and crew into desperation mode, and six minutes later he took a header from teammate Jordan Morris and slammed it into the back of the net to tie the match.

It’s Ferreira’s seventh goal of the Gold Cup, tying Clint Dempsey (2015) for most by a USMNT player in a single Gold Cup tournament.

U.S. and Panama remained tied through the rest of extra time and headed to penalty kicks. It’s the first time in Gold Cup history the U.S. has gone to PKs in back-to-back games.

The match kept its form, as the teams played to extra kicks in penalties as well, before Panama ultimately got a stop on the U.S.’s sixth shot before scoring themselves. Panama won in penalty kicks 5-4, eliminating the U.S. from the Gold Cup.
