Harry Winks ended his two-year goal drought in the most freakish and remarkable circumstances on Thursday night with a 56-yard effort as Tottenham thumped Ludogorets 4-0 in their Europa League contest.

It was a one-sided affair in north London, with Carlos Vinicious also grabbing a brace – his first goals in a Spurs shirt – as Jose Mourinho’s men ran riot.

The midfielder picked the ball up just after the half hour mark and after spotting keeper Plamen Iliev off his line fired an audacious effort towards goal.

When quizzed after the game whether he meant to score it or not, an honest Winks told BT Sport: “I’d love to sit here and say here I did [mean it].

“I’ve got to be honest [though] and say I didn’t mean it. I saw Gaz [Gareth Bale] making the run and just overhit it.

“But I’ll talk it it’s a goal at the end of the day and I’m really happy to get on the scoresheet.”

Former Spurs striker Peter Crouch admired Winks’ honesty and said after the game: “There’s plenty of players who would lie in that kind of situation, fair play to him.”

Lucas Moura added gloss to the scoreline with Spurs’ fourth goal soon after to cap off a good night’s work.

On his recent lack of first-team football, Winks added: “It was an important game to pick my confidence up.

“It’s been very difficult [being on the fringes of the team], but all I can do is when I get opportunities like this is to score and play well.

“I’m happy with how the team played and how I played it, so it was a good result which we needed to get.”
