Possibly the match of the night came when Dubliner Sheamus challenged Austrian powerhouse Gunther for the Intercontinental title.

The Irishman, who has held every other major belt in the company, was ultimately beaten in what was a throwback heavyweight slugfest.

Sheamus, accompanied to the ring by his posse of Birmingham-native Butch, and West Yorkshire-born Ridge Holland.

And while he was the only one of the three who has NOT British, he was embraced by the crowd in attendance at the Principality Stadium.

So much so that, after the match, the 62,000 people gave a visibly emotional Sheamus a standing ovation and cheered his name.

WWE tweeted a video of the post-match reception, with fans offering their glowing appraisals of the multi-time WWE and World Heavyweight champion.

Wrestling legend Shane ‘Hurricane’ Helms tweeted; “One of the consistently best performers going today. Period.”

One fan said: “So good to see Sheamus getting the respect he’s worked his ass off to get. Fella’s a real one.

Another fan said: “He finally got his props for what he always was….a bruiser.

“All he needed was the right opponent and atmosphere. His legacy is now cemented. Give me pt 2 at mania in LA.”

Italian pro wrestler Matt Valention revealed: “Sheamus was one of the guys that made me want to become a wrestler. I love this guy and he deserves the world. All out hard hitting slobber knockin brute!

“@WWESheamus Now I just need a strong Italian champ and I’ll feel complete in my heritage lol”

The 44-year-old made his debut for WWE in July 2009, winning the WWE title from John Cena that December.

In total, he has held the top strap three times, the World Heavyweight title, and the US belt thrice.

He also teamed with AEW’s Claudio Castagnoli to four RAW Tag-Team titles, and the SmackDown tag belts once.

The only title he is yet to win is the Intercontinental Championship, which has been held by Gunther since June.
